  1. By far, the best advice and tip to date. Just awesome.

  2. This is a great point. My day job is as a graphic designer and it’s the same there. There are trends that one must keep up with in order to know the latest language and ideas that are selling. You must also network heavily. Almost all of the work I get comes from my own personal networking rather than the amorphous ether. I have spent a few years now developing my writing craft and have not focused on the business side. With Marvin’s prodding, I think it’s high time I did so.

    Cheers,

  3. Dear Marvin,
When I lived in New York I wrote for Comic Books and networking was easy. I never had a story rejected and at one time I was writing five stories a week. When I moved to Los Angeles I switched to designing and worked for all the studios, including Disney, Universal, Warner Bros, etc., in the animation department and again networking was easy. Now that I live in Florida I’ve written several screenplays and although I post tem on line (Inktip.com) I cannot get anyone to produce any of them. I can’t seem to network except at non-paying Indie Productions. Any advice?

  9. I really appreciate this advice! It’s a business like any other and marketing skills are crucial. I read a book a while back called “How to Master the Art of Selling” by Tom Hopkins and found it to be very informative. I’ll definitely take the time to check out Gerber’s book as well. Thank you for the tips!

  10. Thanks for another great tip and the advice is always appreciated. Can you post some of the best ways and areas to Network? East Coast is different than West Coast and in the Midwest, what opportunites exist there networking outside of just getting out and around as often as possible? Without traveling 4-5 times a year, which events are the ones to highlight for networking?
