That is a hot tip! I think many writers express themselves well on paper, but then find themselves flustered when confronted with having to explain themselves at a meeting. I will definitely follow up on this one.

Your passion and enthusiasm are catching! I have forwarded this tip to my graduating students at an international college where we emphasize public speaking and oral presentation and where I am forever telling them that oral skills, the ability to articulate ideas at short notice and to impart one’s own passion about anything at all to others is a huge key to success and to appropriate team-building in any field.

I have today got myself into a Toastmasters meeting 10 mins from where I like in the UK.

It’s one thing being a writer and it’s another backing up your talent with the business side of things.

We writers CAN get so wrapped up in how well we communicate on the page with our “reel” people that we forget how to communicate face to face with “real” people. And ANY practice doing this is good practice.

Marvin,
That is such a great tip because you are right about most writers, myself included at one time. I went back to school at an advanced age to finish a degree in English. One of the courses I had to take was Public Speaking and I tried every way I could think of to get out of taking that class. I did take it, and I loved it, that is after I stopped shaking and sweating before each speech. That course gave me a great foundation of confidence and the skills you talked about to communicate verbally, not just on paper. Thanks
