  1. Your advice is right on the mark, Marvin! Thank you for your generous spirit and willingness to share your experience with others. I totally love your “may-your-life-be-extraordinary” trademark!
I watched your video series, picked up and ran with the tip regarding “seeing the DVD cover” tip. Thanks again! May your life continue to be extraordinary!

  2. Great tip Marvin. Another avenue is to find something you are excited about- a hobby or interest that others would be interested in and give a free talk on the item. I have done this on regular occassions about quilts and the meanings of their patterns. I’ve had opportunity to speak in public school settings as well as quilting groups that met in churches and businesses. The process not only impassioned my interest but it also fine-tuned my ability to communicate well.

  3. This was a great clip and very informative. Us screenwriters are always looking for anything that would get us a step closer to getting a foot in the door. Marvin Acuna is great at what he does, he is like an E. F. Hutton to us screenwriters, so when he talk, we listen. Thank you.

  4. Marvin,

Once again, you’re dead on right! One could have the cure for cancer, and if they weren’t passionate about telling their story of the cure, if they weren’t excited about it to the point of contagious enthusiasm, it would fall flat on its face.

I’ve seen bad ideas in many industries sold based on the wonderful presentation, and watched as great ideas have fallen to the wayside and have become, well… lost and forgotten, all because of the presentation. Show the Steak – BUT SELL THE SIZZLE!

As a writer, I feel no one can pitch my work like I can. I’ve lived each project daily… put my blood, sweat and (even) TEARS into most of them… put me in a meeting and everyone is on the same energetic vibe I am when all is said and done. It’s all about passion for your own work. Every writer should be able to convey that passion, especially if the work was hard and the journey a struggle. They should all be thinking – this may be my ONLY chance, so I better make it count!

“Embrace the adventure,” and bring everyone along with you!

Please keep the tips coming, Marvin! It’s ALL good!

    Have a wondrous day!

  5. Hi Marvin,

Thanks for this invaluable tip. I have had the privilege of attending a Toastmasters function up here in Ottawa, Canada and it was phenomenal.

A writer needs to communicate beyond the page and the value of public speaking skills is immeasurable.

  10. Marvin,
That is such a great tip because you are right about most writers, myself included at one time. I went back to school at an advanced age to finish a degree in English. One of the courses I had to take was Public Speaking and I tried every way I could think of to get out of taking that class. I did take it, and I loved it, that is after I stopped shaking and sweating before each speech. That course gave me a great foundation of confidence and the skills you talked about to communicate verbally, not just on paper. Thanks :)

  12. Thanks for the tip, Marvin.
We writers CAN get so wrapped up in how well we communicate on the page with our “reel” people that we forget how to communicate face to face with “real” people. And ANY practice doing this is good practice.
May YOUR life be extraordinary, too!

  13. Hi Marvin,

Once again…You’re the man! Thank you for this wonderful tip!!

I have today got myself into a Toastmasters meeting 10 mins from where I like in the UK.

It’s one thing being a writer and it’s another backing up your talent with the business side of things.

Hope you and your team are well Marvin and thank you for your generosity.

  15. Marvin,

Thank you for the tip. I absolutely agree – good public speaking skill should not be overlooked. What’s more, this skill is vital not only for screenwriters but for almost every profession. Almost…
I heard about the toastmasters, can’t use this program though – not a drinker. Thanks anyway.

  16. Marvin,

Your passion and enthusiasm are catching! I have forwarded this tip to my graduating students at an international college where we emphasize public speaking and oral presentation and where I am forever telling them that oral skills, the ability to articulate ideas at short notice and to impart one’s own passion about anything at all to others is a huge key to success and to appropriate team-building in any field.

    Thanks! Love it!

  17. Hi Marvin

That is a hot tip! I think many writers express themselves well on paper, but then find themselves flustered when confronted with having to explain themselves at a meeting. I will definitely follow up on this one.

Many thanks for all your excellent tips and info so far.
